2022.01.24 16:35 Pakt_ All Champs to Mastery 7: Akshan

Intro
Hello, I am an on and off player since season 1. I am 100% hard stuck gold and plan on playing every champion to Mastery 7 as a way to improve as well as have fun and keep things fresh. I main mid, and usually off-role ADC and will generally favor these roles if the champion is viable on them. I know this is most likely a slow and ineffective way to improve, but I'm doing it anyway and writing a bit about it after each champion I complete. I was going to be doing these write-ups for myself anyway so i figured, why not share it with summonerschool in case anyone else finds value in this.
Completed: Aatrox Ahri Akali
Akshan Review
Total Games to M7: 92 Normal Games: 7 Ranked Games: 85 Win Rate: 47% (40W / 45L) Mid: 48% (77 games) Bot: 50% (6 games) Jg: 0% (2 games, was facing 12 hour dodge so i played out autofill) LP Start: Gold 4 61 LP LP End: Gold 4 48 LP Differential: -13 Queued Roles: Mid/Bot Start: 1/17/2022 End: 1/23/2022 Patch: 12.1 - 12.2
Subjective Stats Difficulty: 7 Enjoyment: 7 Personal Tier Ranking: A Mid: A Bot: A Reasoning: While I personally struggled on the champion he felt very strong when I wasn't inting. The swing is also a really difficult but fun mechanic to play with.
Mastery 7 Reflection
I suck at Akshan. Or at least for the first like 50 games I did. I'm surprised I didn't demote to silver during this challenge because I scraped more losses against 0LP gold 4 than I ever have in the past. I believe I suffered the exact same issue I did with Ahri in that I often fed due to how easily poor positioning can be punished when you are squishy. I have mained assassins and melee champions (in previous seasons) too long that my old adc positioning skills have thoroughly rusted. On top of being as squishy as most ADCs he rewards going in and out of fights using his swing for damage and as an escape. So if you mess up your swing you die VERY easily, and believe me his swing is super easy to mess up. I have swung the wrong direction or smashed my face into walls and malphites and trundles so many times I was losing hope and confidence in myself that I'd ever make it to Mastery 7 on this champion. Even in games I won I was often the reason we almost lost. I writhed in the pits of despair so long I had to cope by viewing my place in the game of League of Legends as that of a protagonist at his lowest point who must endure hardship to come out the other side with more experience and skill.
Despite the overwhelming number of discouraging games a protagonist must persevere so I did. When I became tilted and wanted to quit I hummed a specific song I recently remembered from my childhood called "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" by The Offspring. It worked for the most part in distracting my brain from the fact I was 0/11 against Anivia, or that other time I went 7/16 against... Anivia. It was a less destructive alternative to breaking my keyboard in half as I often recall being tempted to do. Of course these coping mechanisms were only temporary measures and something needed to be done about the mental tilt I was experiencing that was clearly making things worse.
If Akali was a mechanics bootcamp, Akshan was a mental bootcamp. I didn't see significant improvement on my performance until I started to put a leash on my emotions. Even though his swing ability was a common point of failure, midway through the challenge I was still primarily losing to my poor decisions not the occasional mess up executing a swing incorrectly. Out of game I am very calm and collected. Very few things rile me up. In game though, when a play doesn't go my way I can't help but think even for a moment those dreaded two words. Jg diff. I basically become a whiny child who throws a tantrum when things don't go my way in a game of league of legends. Not that I was toxic, I play with chat off, but still I threw out some question mark pings that at the end of the day were unnecessary. I knew on an intellectual level this was an obstacle in the way of my improvement. This particular challenge became less about getting Akshan to Mastery 7, and more about getting my mental to mastery 7.
Each time I felt myself getting heated over a play gone wrong or anything at all, I would spend my time in the gray screen closing my eyes and taking a slow, deep breath. This helped unwind the tension brought on by anger and would allow me to slip back into the more zen/stoic mindset that I wanted to practice. I watched a ted talk once where this lady said something like "what you practice grows". I don't even remember what the ted talk was about but that stuck with me. For realz I actually said that line to myself as I took a deep breath every time I found myself practicing anger instead of practicing patience and analyzing the game at hand.
The results were pleasing to me. My win rate was significantly higher on the days where I implemented this mental ritual. I should add that the whole challenge was only 6 days long so its all a bit anecdotal, but I feel optimistic. Interestingly by the time I started implementing this mental resilience training of sorts into my games, I had already reached diminishing returns on my Akshan mechanics. I was rarely messing up swings by this point but was still losing quite a bit. So I like to think the increase in win rate was a direct result of the mentality shift rather than me simply getting better at the champion. Of course who is to say with so little evidence.
Overall this challenge has brought to my attention some things that are making me consider changing this from an "all champs to m7" challenge to "here are my results with this method of improvement" write ups. I can see it potentially being a more valuable use of time. For now though, I will continue with Alistar with the same "overall improvement" mindset I tried to have with Akshan. I barely ever play support so surely it will be worth investing some time learning the role.
BUILD:
Shieldbow -> Wit's End -> Guinsoo's Rageblade
Against AD comps I would sometimes skip Wit's end and build rageblade into other crit items. If I was against a heavy tank comp I would go Kraken Slayer first and pick up Blade of the Ruined King for the lifesteal. I'm not sure if this was correct but it seemed to be the intuitive route.
I wish I tried runaan's hurricane, looking back would it not be very strong along side guinsoo's and all the on hit effects he builds on top of his passive?
NEW MAIN???
I like having him in my tool kit, but I do not see myself using Akshan as a main.
Learning Curve
Advice / Pitfalls: - It is very easy to over-arc or under-arc your swing, it takes practice to get it right and it can be devastating to end the swing early by smashing into a wall or champion. - Don't panic swing away when a melee hops on you. Often times you will just bump into them if they are overlapping their hit box with you. Assuming you aren't about to INSTANTLY die, then its usually better to reposition to make sure your escape swing isn't interrupted. Also swing early if you anticipate they are about to get on top of you. If the gap close mid swing you will often get interrupted. - Careful using your swing as dps for trading in lane, if you don't get a kill to reset it you are as immobile as Ashe without the peel. - Swing doesn't give priority to champions over minions afaik, you are likely to auto a bunch of minions if your target is standing near them when you wanted to swing by and shoot the Anivia instead. Maybe I was doing something wrong but often I would set up a juicy drive-by swing and the minions would get targeted dealing no damage to the intended bird. - IMPORTANT, you can swing almost 360 degrees around the enemy nexus right before the game ends if you stand far enough back when you launch the grappling hook.
Phase 1: - Failed a ton at using E (Swing) - Scouting using camouflage from w. - Learned the ins and outs of last hitting with his double attack. - Activating R early before they get behind cover. - Q mechanics started to set in making sure to consider minions when calculating a skill shot.
Phase 2: - Realized you can get a pretty big distance swing by just aiming down the wall ahead of you even if you are right next to it. - Q reveals Fog of War. - Started to keep shields in mind when using R, i had many missed executes because I used R early when they still had a shield up.
Phase 3: - Started to reposition Ult by using swing. As it turns out you can swing while ulting. - Rarely failed any swings, and even pulled off some pretty cool plays swinging around corners and covering a ton of distance.
Did I Improve as a Player
- Mental, I improved in this aspect the most and will be focusing on this from here on out, I want to get to the point where I don't ever tilt. Or at least very rarely. - Warding, I am not currently marked as a Lee Sin cosplayer! Still not great at it though.
Current Weaknesses
- Positioning, I still die too often to this, but the mentality shift did help. - Roam timing, I miss a lot of cs because I am not timing my roams correctly. - Properly playing out ranged vs melee mid match ups, this is specific but whenever I was against zed or yone I would usually lose. It feels like I have like 3-5 levels of power over them before I become gold in their pockets. When I watched Byergsen play similar match ups he would put SO much more pressure on them than I was. I would often over pressure and die, or under pressure and give them a free lane. It takes really good positional micro mechanics to properly punish melee mids it seems.
LP Graph
Changes
Renamed "Pitfalls" -> "Advice / Pitfalls"
Renamed "Where I improved" -> "Did I improve as a player"
Renamed "Room to grow" -> current weaknesses
Removed "pre-challenge thoughts" and "normals" because i forgot to write the pre challenge thoughts and didnt have much productive to say in normals because i played only a few normals with this champion. Will likely add them back in later posts.
SIDE NOTE: There were 2 or 3 Akali games scattered in, this is the first time ive had a problem with playing a champion with a high ban rate. A few times I had to fill in a game with Akali because I was banned out with no dodges left (the 12 hour dodge). I am debating if I should fill in those games with champions I have not played yet or ones I have. For the integrity of the challenge I should probably only do champions I have played, but its a time saver if I do ones I haven't.
Outro
If you have any suggestions let me know! These are just the things that came to mind and seemed important or interesting. I figure if I am putting a lot of time into this, I may as well share all of the knowledge I can from it. So I hope this had some value to you, and I really appreciate the positive feedback I've had one doing the challenge thus far.
I am not a professional streamer, but if you want to follow my progress, talk league, critique my play, or discuss the challenge you can find me at twitch.tv/pakt__ where I sometimes stream.
NEXT: Alistar
TLDR: Raging child becomes stoic man through the power of breathing.
Actual TLDR: Akshan was a fun but challenging champion to learn, surprisingly more outside my comfort zone than Akali. Playing him made me realize weaknesses I had as a player, especially in regards to my mental which I attempted to improve on in this challenge.

2022.01.24 16:35 Ok_Refrigerator5862 Not loving this season so far.

I might get a lot of hate for this but hey, everyone has got an OPINION and this is mine. Reminder that opinions are not facts.
I am not a big fan of this season so far. For starters, the nudity seems overboard, I don’t mind nudity if it serves a purpose but this season it just seems like it’s used for shock value rather than to drive a story/convey a point/literally have any value other than to say “hey we can do this so we will.” Apparently, I’ve heard HBO is known for this, still doesn’t excuse it.
Cassie: Her character “loves to be loved” like Maddy said. She has a nearly impossible time saying no to guys…WHO PURSUE HER. That’s why it made sense in the first episode for her to hook up with Nate when he came onto her. She had broken up with McKay, had a fight with Lexi, blah blah blah, she was somewhat vulnerable.
It is still shitty behavior but I am not judging the characters’ morality in this post. These are all obviously flawed/troubled people and we’re just consuming their stories. Also, we’re just gonna get rid of McKay like that because….he happens to be in college…???
Anyway, for Cassie’s character to become so pushy/obsessed with Nate though, it just doesn’t make sense with her character in my opinion.
Cal: this past episode the director said, “one of the things I love I about this show is being able to provide more context, why someone is the way they are…someone may have hated the character of Cal before this opening but that backstory was always a part of him, it just wasn’t something we knew…” LOL.
You expect us to believe that Cal is the way he is because when he was in high school he slept with his best friend but couldn’t be with him because of his family and because he got his gf pregnant??? He sleeps with underage people, acts out violent sexual acts AND films the whole thing for his collection because essentially he’s not straight and his family wouldn’t accept him….? That’s Cal’s deep and profound backstory???
Bonus fire round: Lexi, Jules, and Kat’s characters don’t feel like the same characters from season 1.
An argument/excuse I’ve heard is that some of them are supposed to be “evolving,” but like…the show didn’t show any of that stuff…
Just because it’s a new season it doesn’t mean you can get away with coming back with different characters just because you want to write them differently lol. My issue is not that they are not the same, my issue is that you didn’t show this evolution. They were one person one second and a completely different one the next. Didn’t only a small amount of time happen between the season finale and the New Year’s ep???
Also, speaking of the New Year’s ep, Ru and Jules are just gonna get back together in the blink of an eye because they needed to be together to drive the Elliot/Jules/Rue storyline this season? Lol. They hadn’t spoken since Jules left on the train and they meet up at this party, barely talk and poof they’re back together??? Lol.
I can keep going but I’ll leave it at that. I love this show, I’m just feeling a little let down this season. Things just don’t make sense. Oh and btw I'm not just hating, I think that the music, looks, and acting are great btw, along with the cinematography but yeah. What are your thoughts?

2022.01.24 16:35 Simple_Tank_3684 On a placement in b4 audit - is it worth it staying if I’ll be chartered in only two years after uni?

Currently doing a placement at a b4 audit. I should hopefully get a grad offer and because this year counts as year one for the ACA it’ll mean I’ll be a chartered accountant only two years out of uni.
Problem is that I don’t like it and I would rather do something commercial. But salary wise / career wise as it’s only two years after uni is it worth staying and then moving? What would you do? In a regional office and I don’t have to travel to clients because I’m in the banking sector
